Wolverine tracks in deep snow glisten in low winter sunlight
We've been making fur jewelry for many years now and our audience and customer base has grown massively in that time. Many of our customers are local to us and are familiar with trapping because it's part of their life or it's just so common in our area that gives them the chance to learn about the use of fur and harvesting it. Those who are either new followers or living in large urban areas, trapping isn't familiar at all. I want to share a few things that I think are important to know about our use of fur. Please have a read through the list below and let us know what surprised or delighted you the most. There isn't a comments section in our blog posts but we encourage you to DM us on social media or send an email. We'd love to hear from you. I hope you learn something you didn't know before reading!
- All of the wild fur used in our products is sourced from Indigenous trappers in the Yukon.
- When we buy furs, we set our prices at the beginning of the season so the trappers can make informed decisions about which furs to target.
- The prices that we offer trappers takes into consideration the “top lot” price that those furs are known to sell for in the auction house stream. This can be the difference between $25 (auction price) for a lynx pelt or $300 (our price).
- We make every effort to use the entire pelt. We do this by making unique jewelry items like rings, pendants, cufflinks, tie clips but we also use the furs in our line of greeting cards which goes a long way to eliminating waste. We recently began working with a paint brush maker to use the tails of some of our furs which can be a real challenge to use.
- We only use naturally coloured furs and do not dye our furs. Creator has given us such gorgeous colours and textures to work with, we don’t need to modify them.
- We use a lot of copper for its significance in George’s Tlingit culture. Copper is a symbol of wealth and including this important metal is how I can honour him and his invaluable contribution to the wellbeing and overall success of the business.
- All of our jewelry is always nickel-free. We use copper, sterling silver, and 14k rose gold fill components.
- I make everything myself. Working with findings sourced from various trusted suppliers, every cut, every stitch is made by my hands.
- All of the wild furs featured in our designs are handled with care and respect always. We understand that these furs are a gift and they are harvested with gratitude and humility while adhering to the highest standards of ethical harvest. Those practices impact the relationship our customers have with their pieces and those good vibes stay with every pair of earrings, necklace, ring, and bracelet.
- We love what we do. We understand that our job is to educate and share stories with folks who aren’t familiar with fur trapping. We are a bridge between the trappers who supply our gorgeous Wild Yukon Furs and the incredibly supportive customers who buy and wear our pieces. Our trappers are a valued part of our supply chain and our customers are collectors with discerning tastes. What a wonderful match.
